Volunteers Needed

Come on out and plant some trees with us this spring! Bring your family and friends too.

Below are details on all the spring projects that we need your help to complete. You'll be planting native trees and shrubs and mulching them. The work is fun and relatively easy, suitable for families and people of all ages. Bring a shovel or rake if you can, and if you have a wheel barrow that's easy to transport, we'll put it to use. If you don't have tools, don't worry, we've got plenty to share. Sturdy shoes and gardening gloves are also helpful to have. We'll have water to drink and people there to show you what to do.

Help us recruit more volunteers! Please print out this flyer and post at your workplace, place of worship, school, grocery store, etc. Click here for a .pdf document.

Greenway Park
Saturday, April 8, 9-noon
a project sponsored by Trees for London
Trees for London is planting 16 native trees and 50 border dogwoods as part of their final project. This organization, established over two decades ago with a vision to fill London with native trees, is passing the shovel to ReForest London. ReForest London will be there to accept that mandate willingly and to thank Trees for London for its many years of work. If driving, park at the Greenside Avenue parking lot off Springbank Drive and walk east along the bike path toward the planting site, which is at the south end of the bike and pedestrian tunnel at Horton Street.

Virginia Park
Saturday, April 8, 1-4pm

a project by Stoneybrook Heights-Uplands Ratepayers Association
Join the neighbours of this north London park to naturalize an area of the park. We will continue work that was begun in the fall. Virginia Park is located north of Fanshawe Park Road and West of Adelaide. If you drive, park on Repton Ave. and enter the park there.

Riverforks Park
Saturday, April 22, 1-4 pm

a project by the Riverforks Neighbourhood Association
We will be naturalizing a portion of this downtown park. The park is right on the Thames Valley trail at the forks of the Thames. If you drive, park on Becher Street and walk down the path to the park. Three London MPP's will be attending this event to help celebrate Earth Day and to launch ReForest London's second year.

University Hospital
Saturday, April 22, 11am-3pm
a project by the Canadian Liver Foundation
Join the Canadian Liver Foundation to plant native trees at the gates of UWO at Windemere and Perth Drive, near University Hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre. Springbank Gardens will be donating 10% of all profits from native plants purchased prior to April 22 to the Canadian Liver Foundation for this project. Liver disease is the fourth leading cause of death by disease in Canada, and affects more than three million Canadians.  This Earth Day, you can help them, help the city and help the planet all at once.

Kiwanis Park
Saturday, April 29, 10am-noon

sponsored by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
We will be finishing up a project we began at this park last fall. We have about 80 new trees and shrubs to plant. The location is at the south end of Kiwanis Park, at Pottersburg Creek, off Gore Road and west of Firestone Blvd. If you drive, park at Bethel Church and look for signs.

Thames Park
May 6, 10am-1pm

a project by Old South Community Organization and Wortley Village Business Association
OSCO began this project in the Spring of 2005 and returned in the fall to plant more. We'll be planting lots more native species along the creek and checking in on the plants we planted last year and doing a bit of maintenance. Thames Park is located off Ridout Street at the Thames River. The planting site is behind the baseball fields. This year's project will also install more trees in Wortley Village, which will be planted at a later date.

Jaycee Park
Saturday, May 13, 1-4pm

a project by Angry Agency
Join punk-ska band Angry Agency to plant native trees in Jaycee Park. Angry Agency raised over $1300 last winter at a benefit concert to sponsor this project. Jaycee Park is located off Aldersbrook Road, west of Wonderland and south of Fanshawe Park Road.

Additional Spring Projects

In addition to the projects above, we've got several other projects planned with schools, business associations and other community groups.

Our complete project list, including a few already in the works for the fall, can be found here

Tree Planting Tips

Thinking about planting a trees spring in your yard or place of business? Spring is a great time to plant a tree - just be sure to keep it watered throughout the summer.

ReForest London has lots of resources on our website to help you choose the best species for your space, properly plant the tree, and care for the tree. One of our most popular pages, How to Kill a Tree, is a humorous look at what not to do to your tree.
